What Is Sliding Glass Door Repair?

Sliding glass door repair fixes the parts that make a slider slide, seal and lock, and replaces the glass if it is broken. A sliding door is a heavy glass panel riding on two small rollers along an aluminium track. When any part of that system wears, the door drags, jumps the track, rattles, leaks air or will not lock.

Almost all of it is fixable without replacing the door. The frame, the fixed panel and usually the glass stay. We replace the worn parts and set the panel back up so it runs true.

Condo Balcony Doors

High-rise sliders in CityPlace, Harbourfront, Humber Bay Shores and Mississauga’s lakeside towers have it harder than most. Wind pressure off the lake, grit, and hundreds of residents’ worth of use on the same door model all add up. They are also often common elements, which means the condo corporation has rules about who can repair them and what parts can be used.

We work with condo PMs on balcony door repairs: getting approval, booking the elevator, matching parts to the building’s door model, and keeping a record for the corporation’s files.

Rebuild Before You Replace

A new sliding patio door installed costs $2,500 and often much more, plus trim and drywall repair. A full rebuild of the existing door costs $690-$950 and usually takes about 3 hours. Unless the frame is warped or rotten, rebuild first.

  1. Lift the panel off the track onto padded horses.
  2. Replace the rollers with steel tandem rollers sized to the bottom rail.
  3. Cap or repair the track so the new rollers have a smooth surface.
  4. Replace the weatherstrip at the interlock and perimeter.
  5. Rehang and adjust the panel so it runs level and the lock lines up.

If the glass is also foggy or cracked, we measure for a new unit on the same visit and install it when it arrives. Send a short video of your door sliding and our glass repair crew in Toronto can often tell you the fix before they come out.

Straight Answers

What Actually Stops Toronto Homeowners From Booking Sliding Glass Door Repair

Is a hard-to-slide door worth repairing?

In our opinion, almost always. A dragging slider is usually worn rollers and a damaged track. New steel rollers and a track cap cost a few hundred dollars and avoid a $2,500+ new door.

Can you get parts for my old door?

Usually, yes. We carry common roller sizes and can match most GTA builder and condo sliders. If an exact roller is discontinued, we fit an adjustable universal roller.

Will a rebuild fix the draft too?

Yes. Worn pile weatherstrip at the interlock and perimeter is the usual cause of drafts and whistling. We replace it as part of the rebuild.

Do I need condo approval for a balcony door repair?

Often the door is a common element. We coordinate with your property manager for approval, elevator booking and any spec requirements.

The 5-Step Precision Glazing Standard

How Does Our Sliding Glass Door Repair Process Work?

Same five steps on every job, from a single pane to a curtain wall bay. Typical timeline: 1-10 business days.

  1. Step 1: Assessment & Safety Stabilization

We test the slide, lock and interlock, check the glass and seal, and look at the track, rollers and weatherstrip to find the real problem.

  2. Step 2: Measurement

Roller type and size, track profile and wear, and if needed laser and micrometer measurement of the sealed unit for a replacement.

  3. Step 3: Glass and Parts Sourcing

Others fit cheap nylon rollers that wear out in a year. We use steel tandem ball-bearing rollers, stainless track caps, and certified Cardinal or Guardian units.

  4. Step 4: Dry-Fit and Spec Match

The crew dry-fits rollers and track cap, checks the panel runs true, and matches any replacement glass to the fixed panel before final assembly.

  5. Step 5: Rebuild & Seal

Panel rehung and adjusted, weatherstrip replaced, lock and keeper aligned, slide tested, and the 2-year warranty written on the invoice.

Toronto Buyers Ask

Sliding Glass Door Repair FAQs

Why is my sliding glass door so hard to open?

The most common cause is worn rollers. Most sliders leave the factory with nylon or plastic rollers that flatten, crack or seize after 10-15 years. The second cause is a damaged or dented track, often from years of grit and the occasional dropped object. Less often, the frame has shifted, the panel has dropped out of adjustment, or the weatherstrip has bunched up at the interlock. On condo balconies, grit blown in off the lake makes all of these worse. We test the slide, lift the panel and check each part so you only pay for what is actually worn. In most cases new steel tandem rollers, a stainless track cap and an adjustment bring the door back to a one-finger slide.

How much does sliding door repair cost in Toronto?

Sliding door repairs run $380-$1,350 per door in Toronto, in CAD before HST. Replacing the rollers at both ends is $380-$520. Rollers plus a stainless track cap is $520-$720. A full rebuild with rollers, track cap, weatherstrip and lock adjustment is $690-$950 and usually takes about 3 hours. If the glass is broken or foggy, a tempered Low-E sealed unit swap runs $650-$1,350.

Can you replace the rollers without replacing the door?

Yes. The operable panel is lifted off the track, the old rollers are removed from the bottom rail and new ones are fitted and adjusted. The frame and glass stay.

What is a track cap?

A stainless steel cap that snaps or screws over the existing aluminium track. It gives the rollers a smooth, hard surface again without removing the frame.

My sliding door lock will not catch. Can you fix it?

Usually. When rollers wear, the panel drops and the lock no longer lines up with the keeper. New rollers and an adjustment often fix it. If the mortise lock is broken, we replace it.

Do you repair commercial sliding doors?

We repair manual commercial sliders and replace their glass. Automatic sliding door operators are serviced by your operator supplier, and we coordinate the glass work with them.

How long does a sliding door repair take?

Most roller and track repairs are done in one visit of 2-3 hours. If parts or a new sealed unit need ordering, it takes 1-10 business days.

Can you replace foggy glass in my sliding door?

Yes. See patio door glass replacement for details on tempered sealed units.

Do you fix car sliding windows?

No. We do residential, commercial and storefront glass only. We do not repair or replace automotive glass or windshields.
