What Counts as a Glass Emergency?
A glass emergency is any break that leaves a building open, unsafe or exposed to weather. In practice, that means four kinds of calls, which make up most of our overnight glass repair work across Toronto and the GTA:
- Break-ins. A smashed storefront on Queen West at 2am, a back door lite kicked in on a Leslieville semi, a ground-floor condo window in CityPlace.
- Storm damage. Wind-cracked balcony doors in lakeside towers, branches through bedroom windows after a summer storm, hail on skylights.
- Accidents. A patio door walked into, a shower door that let go, a ball through a front window.
- Spontaneous breakage. Tempered glass sometimes shatters on its own because of a nickel sulfide inclusion. It looks like vandalism, but nobody touched it.
If the glass is cracked but still sitting in the frame and the room is dry, it is usually not an emergency. Put clear packing tape across the crack, keep people away from it, and book a regular window glass repair visit. You save the callout.
What Happens When You Call 24/7 Dispatch
Dispatch answers, takes your address, what broke and whether there is an insurance claim. You get an arrival window: 2 hours in the 416, 4 hours in the 905. The crew lead calls or texts when they are on the way.
On site, the first job is safety. Loose shards come out of the frame with gloves and a bin, the floor and sidewalk are swept, and the opening is checked for frame damage. Then we decide, with you, whether real glass can go in tonight or whether the opening gets boarded.
Before anything is cleaned, the crew photographs the damage from inside and outside with time stamps. Those photos, plus the measurements and the itemised invoice, are what your adjuster needs.
Board-Up or Same-Night Glass?
The truck carries common sizes of CSA A440 tempered and annealed glass, glazing tape, setting blocks and Dow Corning 795. If the opening fits stock, the crew can often install real glass on the first visit, which saves a second trip.
A board-up is used when the glass is made to order. That includes most sealed units with a Low-E coating, large storefront panels, SentryGlas laminated glass and Pyrostop fire-rated lites. The board-up is 15mm OSB cut on site, screwed to the frame and sealed with Dow Corning 795 so it stays weathertight. It is designed to stay up for days, not hours, in case the permanent glass takes a little longer.
| Situation | What the crew does tonight | Permanent glass |
|---|---|---|
| Small house window, single pane | Same-night glass from stock | Done on first visit |
| Sealed unit, Low-E coated | Board-up or temporary pane | 7-14 business days |
| Storefront panel, tempered | Board-up | Within 72 hours where stock allows |
| Laminated or fire-rated lite | Board-up | 5-10 business days |
| Balcony door, condo | Temporary panel or board | 10-14 business days |
Insurance Direct-Billing After a Break-In
Break-in claims are where most people get stuck. The adjuster’s number and the glazier’s invoice do not match, the homeowner pays the difference, and the cash advance sits on a credit card for weeks.
We direct-bill Intact, Aviva, Economical and Co-operators on about 85 percent of break-in claims. You give us the claim number, we send the adjuster the photo set and an itemised invoice that shows glass type, thickness, size, labour and sealant on separate lines. Because the adjuster can see exactly what is being replaced, the usual $800 gap between the two numbers rarely shows up. You pay your deductible and nothing else.
How to Lower the Cost of an Emergency
A few things make a real difference to the invoice:
- Call before midnight if you can. No after-hours surcharge up to midnight.
- Tell dispatch the size of the opening. A rough width and height lets the crew bring the right glass and maybe finish in one visit.
- Have the claim number ready. Direct-billing starts on the spot.
- Do not tape cardboard over it and wait a week. Water damage to sills, drywall and flooring often costs more than the glass.
For anything urgent, call the crew at (416) 555-0100. If it can wait until business hours, send a message with a photo and the crew will quote it in writing.
