What Is Patio Door Glass Replacement?

Patio door glass replacement is swapping the sealed glass unit in a sliding or hinged patio door while keeping the frame, track and hardware. Most GTA patio doors are two-panel sliders with one fixed and one operable panel, each holding a tall double-pane unit. When either unit cracks, shatters or fogs, we replace that unit and leave the rest of the door alone.

Panels range from 68 inches on older builder doors to 96 inches on newer and custom homes. They are heavy, they are always tempered, and they are made to order. That is why the crew fits a temporary panel the same day if the glass is broken, so the house is secure while the new unit is built.

What Goes Into a Patio Door Unit

  • Tempered glass on both sides. Required by code and by CSA A440 for doors.
  • Low-E coating. Guardian ClimaGuard or Pilkington OptiTherm keeps heat in during winter, which matters on a glass wall facing the backyard.
  • Argon fill and warm-edge spacer. Better insulation and less condensation along the bottom.
  • Matched grilles. Internal grilles between the glass are matched in pattern and colour.
  • Optional upgrades. Laminated outer lite for security, solar control coating for west-facing doors, triple-pane for very large panels.

Signs It Is Time

  1. Fog or haze between the panes that does not wipe off.
  2. A crack in either lite, or a shattered panel.
  3. Cold drafts or frost on the inside of the glass in winter.
  4. Heavy condensation along the bottom edge that soaks the sill.

If the door is hard to slide or the lock will not line up, the glass may be fine and the rollers worn. That is a cheaper sliding door repair.

Lakeside and Large-Panel Homes

Homes near the lake in Port Credit, Lorne Park, Bronte and Humber Bay see strong winds and big temperature swings, which is hard on patio door seals. Newer custom homes in Kleinburg, Oak Ridges and Joshua Creek often have oversized multi-panel systems that need three installers and careful lifting. The crew brings the right gear for both.

Send a photo of your patio door and the approximate panel size, and our glass repair team in Toronto will quote it in writing.

Straight Answers

What Actually Stops Toronto Homeowners From Booking Patio Door Glass Replacement

Do I need a whole new patio door?

In our opinion, only if the frame or track is shot. Most patio doors just need a new sealed unit, which costs a fraction of the $3,500-$7,000 for a new door.

Will my house be open while the glass is made?

No. If the glass is broken, we fit a temporary panel the same day so the door closes and locks. The new unit goes in 10-14 business days later.

Will a new patio panel fog up again?

Our units use a dual seal and warm-edge spacer and carry a 10-year Guardian seal warranty in writing, plus our 2-year workmanship warranty.

Can you match the other panel or my windows?

Yes. We match coating, grilles and spacer colour so the fixed and operable panels look the same.

The 5-Step Precision Glazing Standard

How Does Our Patio Door Glass Replacement Process Work?

Same five steps on every job, from a single pane to a curtain wall bay. Typical timeline: 10-14 business days sealed; same-day stock tempered.

  1. Step 1: Assessment & Safety Stabilization

We check the frame, track and rollers, clear broken glass from the deck and floor, and fit a temporary panel so the door is secure.

  2. Step 2: Measurement

Laser measurement of the glass size, micrometer check of unit thickness and a read of the spacer stamp, plus grille and coating details.

  3. Step 3: Glass Sourcing

Others order non-tempered or non-certified import units. We order tempered Low-E Argon units from Guardian and Pilkington fabricators, stamped to CSA A440.

  4. Step 4: Dry-Fit and Spec Match

The crew dry-fits the unit in the panel, checks edge clearance and setting blocks, and matches grilles and coating to the other panel.

  5. Step 5: Install & Seal

Unit glazed into the sash, panel rehung and adjusted, rollers checked, temporary panel removed and both warranties written on the invoice.

Toronto Buyers Ask

Patio Door Glass Replacement FAQs

How much does it cost to replace patio door glass in Toronto?

Patio door glass replacement costs $650-$2,400 per panel in Toronto, in CAD before HST. A standard 68-80 inch builder slider panel with Low-E Argon, tempered on both lites, runs $650-$1,100. Taller 80-96 inch panels or wide fixed lites are usually $1,100-$1,700 and need a three-person carry. Luxury or oversized panels with triple-pane, laminated or solar control glass run $1,700-$2,400. The price includes a temporary panel while the new unit is made, removal and disposal of the old glass, and installation. A roller and track tune-up while the panel is off adds $120-$280. Compare that with $3,500-$7,000 for a full new patio door, and replacing just the glass is the clear choice when the frame is sound.

Can you replace just the glass in a sliding patio door?

Yes. The operable panel is lifted off the track and the old sealed unit is removed from the sash on padded horses. The fixed panel is usually glazed in place. The new unit is set on setting blocks, the sash is closed up, and the panel is rehung.

Why is my patio door glass foggy?

The seal on the sealed unit has failed and moisture has got between the panes. Patio doors face the sun and see big temperature swings, which wears the seal faster than on most windows. The fix is a new sealed unit.

Why did my patio door glass shatter?

Patio glass is tempered, so it breaks into small cubes. Common causes are impact, a slammed door, a stone thrown by a mower, a twisted frame, or a nickel sulfide inclusion that causes spontaneous breakage. We check the frame and rollers so the new glass does not break the same way.

How long does patio door glass replacement take?

New tempered sealed units take 10-14 business days to make. A temporary panel goes in the same day if the glass is broken. Installing the new unit takes 1-3 hours.

Does patio door glass have to be tempered?

Yes. Glass in doors must be safety glass under the Ontario Building Code. Both lites of a patio door sealed unit are CSA A440 tempered.

Can you fix a patio door that is hard to slide?

Yes. Worn rollers and damaged tracks are covered under sliding glass door repair, and we often do both in one visit.

Will home insurance cover a broken patio door?

Most Ontario home policies cover sudden breakage less the deductible. We direct-bill Intact, Aviva, Economical and Co-operators.

Do you replace sunroof or car glass?

No. We do residential, commercial and storefront glass only. We do not repair or replace automotive glass or windshields.

Still have a question?

The crew answers the phone 24/7 and replies to messages within the day.
