The Real Problem

## Why So Many Toronto Glass Jobs Go Wrong Before the Glass Even Arrives

Most bad glass jobs in the GTA are not ruined on install day. They go wrong in the first phone call, the first quote or the first measurement, long before a glazier picks up a suction cup. After 24 years of fixing other people's glass, the crew sees the same handful of mistakes over and over.

### The $800 insurance gap

A storefront gets smashed, the adjuster approves a number, and the glazier's invoice comes in $800 higher. The owner pays the difference. It happens because the quote was vague: "replace glass, labour" with no thickness, no glass type, no sealant line. An itemised quote that names CSA A440 10mm tempered, the setting blocks, the Dow Corning 795 and the board-up as separate lines gives the adjuster nothing to argue with. That is why we direct-bill Intact, Aviva, Economical and Co-operators on 85 percent of break-in claims, and why our invoices rarely come back disputed.

### The wrong insulated glass unit

The second most common failure is a sealed unit ordered by width and height alone. The old unit was 22mm overall with Low-E coated glass on surface 3 and a grey warm-edge spacer. The new one arrives at 25mm, clear, with a shiny aluminium spacer. It either gets forced into the sash, which cracks it, or it goes in and the condo board rejects it at the walkthrough. Every unit we order starts with a micrometer, a spacer stamp and, on towers, a spectrophotometer reading.

### Code confusion: OBC Part 9 and CSA A440

In a house, OBC Part 9 says glass in a door, beside a door or near the floor has to be safety glass. CSA A440 is the standard that safety glass is made and stamped to. We still find annealed float in patio doors and bathroom windows where a previous installer saved $60. That is a failed inspection waiting to happen, and an injury claim an insurer may deny.

### Lead-time deception

"Next week" is the most expensive phrase in this trade. Custom tempered and sealed units take 7-14 business days from a confirmed fabricator order, and nobody can honestly promise less. When a glazier quotes next week and delivers in six, the plywood stays up, the store looks closed and the house stays cold. We quote lead times from the supplier's confirmed order date, in writing.

### Dry-blade chips and old hardware

A tempered panel with a chipped edge from careless handling can sit for months, then shatter on the first cold night. And a new 10mm shower door hung on 20-year-old hinges that were rated for 8mm glass will sag within a season. The crew inspects edges before glazing and checks hardware before it carries new glass.

### What a good job looks like after the install

Invoice literacy matters. A good quote names the glass make, thickness and coating, separates labour from materials, shows the lead time and prints the warranty terms. A good installer also comes back: we book a 90-day post-install check on larger jobs, because that is when setting and seal problems show up, and our written 2-year workmanship warranty covers them. Warranty gaps, like a 10-year IGU warranty with no installer standing behind the install, are how homeowners end up paying twice.

### Do you repair auto glass or windshield?

No. We do residential, commercial and storefront glass only. We do not repair or replace automotive glass or windshields, so please call an auto glass shop for vehicles. Keeping that line clear is deliberate: our trucks carry 15mm OSB, Dow Corning 795, CSA A440 tempered stock and sealed-unit blanks for buildings, not urethane and windshield kits for cars. If a building in the GTA has broken, cracked or foggy glass, that is us. If it has wheels, it is not.

### Can you direct-bill my insurance company for a break-in claim?

Yes. We direct-bill Intact, Aviva, Economical and Co-operators on about 85 percent of Toronto break-in claims, so you only pay your deductible instead of fronting a $500-$2,500 cash advance. Have your claim number ready when you call. The crew photographs the damage before cleanup, records the opening sizes and glass type, and sends the adjuster an itemised CAD invoice on letterhead. Because the adjuster sees the same line items we quote you, the usual $800 gap between the adjuster's number and the glazier's invoice rarely shows up. If your insurer is not on our direct-bill list, we still prepare the full photo and invoice package so you can submit it yourself.

### Can you install shower glass to Starphire low-iron spec?

Yes. We fabricate custom frameless enclosures in 10mm Starphire low-iron tempered glass, which removes the green edge tint of standard float. Custom enclosures run $1,850-$5,500 with 7-14 days from template to install. We template with a laser after the tile is finished, so the glass follows the real walls rather than the drawings, and we pair the panels with Dorma or Blumcraft hinges in chrome, brushed nickel, brass or bronze patina. Every panel is CSA A440 tempered and sealed with Dow Corning 795 at the wet perimeter.

### Can you match a 20-year-old condo spec for IGU replacement?

Yes. We match original Pilkington, Cardinal and Guardian coatings, tint, spacer width and overall unit thickness so the new unit passes condo board and PM walkthroughs. Matched IGUs run $380-$1,500 each. On older towers we read the spacer stamp, measure the overall thickness with a micrometer and check the coating with a spectrophotometer before ordering. That is how a 1998 reflective Pilkington unit in Harbourfront gets replaced without a visible patch on the facade, and why property managers rarely see a rejection on the first walkthrough.

### What is included in the written 2-year workmanship warranty?

It covers our installation for 24 months: perimeter seal adhesion, Dow Corning 795 joints, setting and glazing, hinge and hardware calibration, and water penetration at the glass. It is printed on the final invoice, alongside the 10-year Guardian IGU and 5-year Dorma hardware warranties. If a seal lets go, a hinge sags or water gets in at the glass within that window, the crew comes back and fixes it at no charge. We also book a 90-day post-install check on larger jobs, because that is when most install problems show up if they are going to.

### Do I need a permit, and is the new glass up to code?

Most like-for-like glass replacement needs no permit, but the glass still has to meet code. We spec CSA A440 tempered or laminated safety glass where OBC Part 9 or Part 3 requires it, including doors and lites within 24 inches of a door, and Pyrostop where a fire rating applies. On commercial jobs we check fire separations and AODA visibility markings before ordering, so the new glass passes inspection the first time.

### Can you provide WSIB clearance and a certificate of insurance for commercial work?
