## What Is Glass Door Repair?

Glass door repair is fixing the glass or the hardware of a door without replacing the whole door. It covers two kinds of problem. The first is broken or cracked glass: a French door lite, a storm door panel, a sidelite or a commercial entrance door. The second is hardware: a glass door that sags, drags, slams or no longer locks because a pivot, hinge or closer has worn out.

Often it is both. A commercial door that has been slamming for months because the closer is out of adjustment is the door most likely to crack its glass.

## In-Situ Re-Glazing

For most residential doors, we re-glaze in place. The door stays on its hinges, or is lifted off onto padded horses if it is easier to work flat. The stops come off, the broken glass is removed, the rebate is cleaned, and new glazing tape and setting blocks go in. The new tempered lite is set, the stops are refitted and sealed, and the door goes back to work.

Wood stile-and-rail doors in older homes in Forest Hill, Roncesvalles and Leaside get extra care: stops are numbered and refitted in the same place, nail holes are filled, and paint touch-up is left neat.

## Commercial Door Hardware

Glass entrance doors on storefronts and in plazas take a lot of abuse. Thousands of openings a week, wind loads, and the occasional delivery cart. The hardware we see fail most often:

-   **Floor closers and overhead concealed closers** that lose their check and let the door slam.
-   **Top and bottom pivots** that wear and let the door drop.

### How much does it cost to repair a glass door in Toronto?

Glass door repairs cost $380-$1,450 per door in Toronto, in CAD before HST. A French or interior door lite in tempered glass is usually $380-$650 re-glazed in place. Storm door panels run $380-$560. A sealed double-pane door lite with Low-E, tempered on both sides, is $520-$950. Commercial entrance door glass in 10-12mm tempered or laminated runs $750-$1,450. ### Can you replace just the glass in a French door?

Yes. Most French doors have a single large lite or several smaller lites held by wood or vinyl stops. We remove the stops, take out the broken glass, and set a new CSA A440 tempered lite. Decorative grilles, internal blinds or bevelled glass can usually be matched or reused.

### Why does my commercial glass door sag or drag?

Heavy glass doors hang on pivots or hinges and are controlled by a floor or overhead closer. When the pivot wears or the closer loses adjustment, the door drops and drags on the threshold or stops latching. Adjusting or replacing the pivot and closer fixes it, often in under an hour.

### Does door glass have to be tempered?

Yes. The Ontario Building Code requires safety glass in doors and in lites within 24 inches of a door. That means CSA A440 tempered or laminated glass. We never put annealed glass in a door.

### How long does glass door repair take?

Tempered door lites are made to order and usually take 2-7 business days. The door is secured in the meantime. Hardware adjustments are usually done on the first visit.
