## What Counts as a Glass Emergency?

A glass emergency is any break that leaves a building open, unsafe or exposed to weather. In practice, that means four kinds of calls, which make up most of our overnight

glass repair work across Toronto

[/ →](/)

 and the GTA:

- **Break-ins.** A smashed storefront on Queen West at 2am, a back door lite kicked in on a Leslieville semi, a ground-floor condo window in CityPlace.
- **Storm damage.** Wind-cracked balcony doors in lakeside towers, branches through bedroom windows after a summer storm, hail on skylights.
- **Accidents.** A patio door walked into, a shower door that let go, a ball through a front window.
- **Spontaneous breakage.** Tempered glass sometimes shatters on its own because of a nickel sulfide inclusion. It looks like vandalism, but nobody touched it.

If the glass is cracked but still sitting in the frame and the room is dry, it is usually not an emergency. Put clear packing tape across the crack, keep people away from it, and book a regular

window glass repair

[/window-glass-repair/ →](/window-glass-repair/)

 visit. You save the callout.

## What Happens When You Call 24/7 Dispatch

Dispatch answers, takes your address, what broke and whether there is an insurance claim. You get an arrival window: 2 hours in the 416, 4 hours in the 905. The crew lead calls or texts when they are on the way.

On site, the first job is safety. Loose shards come out of the frame with gloves and a bin, the floor and sidewalk are swept, and the opening is checked for frame damage. Then we decide, with you, whether real glass can go in tonight or whether the opening gets boarded.

Before anything is cleaned, the crew photographs the damage from inside and outside with time stamps. Those photos, plus the measurements and the itemised invoice, are what your adjuster needs.

## Board-Up or Same-Night Glass?

The truck carries common sizes of CSA A440 tempered and annealed glass, glazing tape, setting blocks and Dow Corning 795. If the opening fits stock, the crew can often install real glass on the first visit, which saves a second trip.

A board-up is used when the glass is made to order. That includes most sealed units with a Low-E coating, large storefront panels, SentryGlas laminated glass and Pyrostop fire-rated lites. The board-up is 15mm OSB cut on site, screwed to the frame and sealed with Dow Corning 795 so it stays weathertight. It is designed to stay up for days, not hours, in case the permanent glass takes a little longer.

| Situation | What the crew does tonight | Permanent glass |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small house window, single pane | Same-night glass from stock | Done on first visit |
| Sealed unit, Low-E coated | Board-up or temporary pane | 7-14 business days |
| Storefront panel, tempered | Board-up | Within 72 hours where stock allows |
| Laminated or fire-rated lite | Board-up | 5-10 business days |
| Balcony door, condo | Temporary panel or board | 10-14 business days |

## Insurance Direct-Billing After a Break-In

Break-in claims are where most people get stuck. The adjuster’s number and the glazier’s invoice do not match, the homeowner pays the difference, and the cash advance sits on a credit card for weeks.

We direct-bill Intact, Aviva, Economical and Co-operators on about 85 percent of break-in claims. You give us the claim number, we send the adjuster the photo set and an itemised invoice that shows glass type, thickness, size, labour and sealant on separate lines. Because the adjuster can see exactly what is being replaced, the usual $800 gap between the two numbers rarely shows up. You pay your deductible and nothing else.

## How to Lower the Cost of an Emergency

A few things make a real difference to the invoice:

1. **Call before midnight if you can.** No after-hours surcharge up to midnight.
2. **Tell dispatch the size of the opening.** A rough width and height lets the crew bring the right glass and maybe finish in one visit.
3. **Have the claim number ready.** Direct-billing starts on the spot.
4. **Do not tape cardboard over it and wait a week.** Water damage to sills, drywall and flooring often costs more than the glass.

For anything urgent, call the crew at (416) 555-0100. If it can wait until business hours,

send a message

[/contact/ →](/contact/)

with a photo and the crew will quote it in writing.

Straight Answers

## What Actually Stops Toronto Homeowners From Booking Emergency Glass Repair

### Q.Is it worth paying for an emergency callout, or can it wait until morning?

In our opinion, an open opening overnight is the most expensive thing on the job. Rain, theft and a cold house cost more than a $185 make-safe. If the glass is cracked but still in the frame, tape it and call us in the morning.

### Q.Will I be charged extra because it is night or a weekend?

No after-hours surcharge up to midnight, any day of the week. After midnight we tell you the surcharge on the phone before the crew leaves, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

### Q.Do I have to pay the whole bill and wait for insurance?

Usually not. We direct-bill Intact, Aviva, Economical and Co-operators on 85 percent of break-in claims. You pay the deductible, we send the adjuster photos and an itemised invoice, and the insurer pays us.

### Q.Will the board-up damage my frame or siding?

We screw OSB into the frame or the rough opening, not into brick or siding where we can avoid it, and seal the perimeter with Dow Corning 795. When the permanent glass goes in, the screw holes are filled or hidden by the stops.

The 5-Step Precision Glazing Standard

## How Does Our Emergency Glass Repair Process Work?

Same five steps on every job, from a single pane to a curtain wall bay. Typical timeline: 2-hr 416 / 4-hr 905 arrival; permanent glass within 72 hours.

1. 1

    ### Step 1: Assessment & Safety Stabilization

Arrival inside 2 hours in the 416 and 4 in the 905. We clear broken glass, check the frame for damage and make the opening safe with 15mm OSB or same-night glass.

2. 2

    ### Step 2: Measurement

While the opening is secured we laser-measure the daylight size, check glass thickness with a micrometer and note the IGU overall thickness, coating and frame type.

3. 3

    ### Step 3: Glass Sourcing

Others patch with non-certified import float. We use CSA A440 tempered from stock or order direct from Pilkington, Cardinal and Guardian for the permanent unit.

4. 4

    ### Step 4: Dry-Fit and Spec Match

The crew dry-fits the permanent glass, checks edges and squareness, and matches tint and coating to the surrounding windows before sealant goes on.

5. 5

    ### Step 5: Install & Dow Corning 795 Seal

Board comes off, glass goes in on new setting blocks, Dow Corning 795 seals the perimeter, and the written 2-year warranty is printed on the invoice.

Toronto Buyers Ask

## Emergency Glass Repair FAQs

### How fast can an emergency glazier get to me in Toronto?

Inside 2 hours anywhere in the 416 and inside 4 hours in the 905, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That covers downtown Toronto, North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke on the 2-hour clock, and Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Brampton, Richmond Hill and Oakville on the 4-hour clock. Our base is in Vaughan, so Woodbridge, Concord and Maple are often reached faster. When you call, dispatch gives you an arrival window and the crew lead texts when they are on the way. If a job is already running late at night, we tell you honestly rather than promising a time we cannot hit. Most callers get a crew at the door well inside the window.

### What does the $185 emergency callout include?

The $185 minimum covers the crew's arrival, broken glass cleanup, a time-stamped photo set for your insurer and a make-safe on a standard opening with 15mm OSB and a Dow Corning 795 weather seal. If you need more than one opening boarded, a large storefront or patio opening secured, or same-night glass installed, the price moves into the $185-$1,850 range and we tell you the number before we start. Every emergency invoice is itemised in CAD on letterhead, which is what insurers like Intact and Aviva expect to see. There is no after-hours surcharge up to midnight.

### Can you install real glass the same night instead of plywood?

Often, yes. The truck carries common sizes of CSA A440 tempered and annealed glass, so many smaller house windows, door lites and storefront sidelites can be glazed on the first visit. Large panels, sealed units with a Low-E coating, laminated security glass and fire-rated glass are made to order, so those openings get a board-up tonight and permanent glass within 72 hours where the fabricator has stock.

### Will my home insurance cover emergency glass repair?

Most Ontario home and commercial policies cover sudden glass breakage from a break-in, vandalism or a storm, less your deductible. Accidental breakage, like a ball through a window, is covered on many policies too. We direct-bill Intact, Aviva, Economical and Co-operators, so you do not front the money. If your deductible is higher than the repair, it can make sense to pay directly, and we will tell you if that looks like the case.

### What should I do while I wait for the crew?

Keep people and pets away from the broken glass. If it is safe, take photos of the damage from inside and outside before anything is moved, because your insurer will want them. Do not try to pull loose shards out of the frame. Close interior doors to keep heat in, and if it is raining, lay towels or a tarp on the floor. If it was a break-in, call the police first and get a report number.

### Do you handle storm and wind damage as well as break-ins?

Yes. High winds off the lake regularly crack condo balcony door glass in Humber Bay Shores and Harbourfront, and falling branches break house windows across the GTA after summer storms. The process is the same: make safe, photograph, measure, and schedule permanent glass.

### Can you match my existing sealed unit after an emergency?

Yes. We read the spacer stamp, measure the overall unit thickness and check the Low-E coating so the permanent insulated glass unit matches the rest of your windows. That is part of the measurement we take on the emergency visit.

### Do you work for condo corporations and property managers after hours?

Yes. Condo PMs call us for lobby doors, amenity room glass and suite balcony doors at all hours. We provide WSIB clearance and a certificate of insurance, and coordinate with security for elevator and loading dock access.

### What happens after the board-up?

You get a written quote for the permanent glass with a confirmed lead time, usually within a day. Once the glass arrives, the crew returns, removes the board, installs and seals the new glass, and hands over the written 2-year workmanship warranty.

### Is emergency glass repair different from emergency board-up?

Board-up is just securing the opening. Emergency glass repair includes the board-up when needed but goes through to the permanent glass. If all you need tonight is the opening secured, see our

emergency board-up service

[/emergency-board-up/ →](/emergency-board-up/)

.

### Do you fix car windshields in an emergency?

No. We do residential, commercial and storefront glass only. We do not repair or replace automotive glass or windshields.

Still have a question?

The crew answers the phone 24/7 and replies to messages within the day.
