## What Is Double-Pane Glass Replacement?

Double-pane glass replacement is ordering and installing a new double-glazed sealed unit, built to the exact specification your window needs. It is the same work as

window glass replacement

[/window-glass-replacement/ →](/window-glass-replacement/)

, but for buyers who care about the build: lite thickness, gap width, coating, gas, spacer and seal.

Getting those details right is the difference between a unit that lasts 25 years and one that fogs in 8. It is also the difference between a unit that drops cleanly into your sash and one that has to be forced, which is how glass gets cracked on install day.

## Anatomy of a Double-Pane Unit

| Component | What it does | What we use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Outer lite | Faces the weather | 3mm, 4mm or 5mm float, tempered where required |
| Gap | Insulating space | 12-20mm, Argon filled |
| Low-E coating | Reflects heat back into the room | Guardian ClimaGuard or Pilkington OptiTherm |
| Inner lite | Faces the room | Matched thickness, coating on surface 3 |
| Spacer | Holds lites apart | Warm-edge, colour matched to frame |
| Primary seal | Gas and moisture barrier | Butyl (polyisobutylene) |
| Secondary seal | Structural bond | Silicone |

## The Two Builds We Use Most

**3/16/3** is the standard residential build in the GTA. Two 3mm lites and a 16mm gap give 22mm overall, which fits most vinyl casements and sliders made since the 1990s. It is light, efficient and the most affordable.

**4/19/4** uses thicker 4mm lites and a wider 19mm gap for 27mm overall. It is stiffer, quieter and handles larger openings without deflecting in the wind. Many newer windows and most picture windows over about 16 sq ft use it.

We build other specs too, like 5/16/5 for very large units or a laminated outer lite for noise on busy streets. The rule is simple: the new unit matches the overall thickness your sash was designed for.

## Common Spec Mistakes

These are the mistakes we see when other installers have been in before us:

1. **Wrong overall thickness.** The unit is forced into a pocket that is too tight, or rattles in one that is too loose.
2. **Low-E on the wrong surface.** The coating faces outward and the window loses heat instead of keeping it.
3. **No setting blocks.** The unit sits on the frame and the bottom edge carries all the weight. Seals fail early.
4. **Aluminium spacer on a new unit.** Cheap and cold, with frost along the bottom edge every winter.
5. **Plain glass where tempered is required.** A code problem near doors, floors and tubs.

## Why the Spec Is on the Quote

Every quote we write lists, unit by unit, the size, the lite thicknesses, the gap, the coating and which surface it goes on, the gas, the spacer type and colour, and whether any lite is tempered. That way you, your contractor or your property manager can check exactly what is being built before anything is ordered.

Straight Answers

## What Actually Stops Toronto Homeowners From Booking Double-Pane Glass Replacement

### Q.Does the exact build really matter, or is a sealed unit a sealed unit?

In our opinion it matters more than anything else. A unit that is 2mm too thick will not fit the sash, and one that is too thin rattles and leaks. We measure overall thickness and pocket depth on site.

### Q.Why pay for Low-E and Argon?

Because the glass is most of the heat loss in a Toronto window. A Low-E Argon unit insulates roughly twice as well as plain clear double glazing, which you feel as warmer floors near the window in January.

### Q.Will a new unit match my other windows?

We match spacer colour, glass thickness and coating. If the rest of your windows are old clear glass, the new Low-E unit may look very slightly different in certain light. We show you samples first.

### Q.Is triple-pane worth it instead?

Sometimes. Triple-pane only works if the sash pocket is deep enough. On most existing windows, a well-built 4/19/4 Low-E Argon unit is the better fit and value.

The 5-Step Precision Glazing Standard

## How Does Our Double-Pane Glass Replacement Process Work?

Same five steps on every job, from a single pane to a curtain wall bay. Typical timeline: 7-14 business days.

1. 1

    ### Step 1: Assessment & Safety Stabilization

We check the sash and frame, identify the current build from the spacer stamp, and secure any broken unit with a temporary pane.

2. 2

    ### Step 2: Measurement

Laser measurement of glass size, micrometer check of each lite and the overall unit thickness, and a steel-rule check of sash pocket depth.

3. 3

    ### Step 3: Glass Sourcing

Others buy non-certified import units off a price list. We order dual-seal units from Guardian, Pilkington and Cardinal fabricators built to your exact spec.

4. 4

    ### Step 4: Dry-Fit and Spec Match

The crew dry-fits each unit, confirms Low-E is on the correct surface, checks edges and squareness, and matches spacer colour before glazing.

5. 5

    ### Step 5: Install & Seal

Unit set on new setting blocks with glazing tape or wet seal, beads refitted, glass cleaned and both warranties written on the invoice.

## Double-Pane Glass Replacement FAQs

### What does 3/16/3 or 4/19/4 mean on a double-pane unit?

It is lite/gap/lite notation in millimetres. A 3/16/3 unit has two 3mm lites of glass with a 16mm gap between them, for an overall thickness of 22mm. A 4/19/4 unit has two 4mm lites and a 19mm gap, for 27mm overall. Thicker lites are stronger and quieter and are used for larger openings, while the gap width affects insulating value. Your sash is built for a specific overall thickness, so the replacement unit has to match it within a millimetre or so. That is why we measure each lite and the overall unit with a micrometer before ordering, and why ordering by width and height alone is a common DIY mistake. If you are not sure what you have, the stamp on the spacer usually tells us.

### How much does double-pane glass replacement cost?

Double-pane units cost $380-$1,100 each in Toronto, in CAD before HST. A small 3/16/3 Low-E Argon unit up to about 8 sq ft runs $380-$520. A medium 4/19/4 unit of 8-16 sq ft is usually $520-$800, and a large 4/19/4 unit up to 26 sq ft runs $800-$1,100. Tempered lites add $80-$220. Spacer colour matching is included.

### Is Argon gas worth it?

Yes. Argon is denser than air, so it slows heat moving across the gap. Combined with a Low-E coating it roughly doubles the insulating value of a double-pane unit compared with clear glass and air. It is standard on every unit we build.

### What is a warm-edge spacer?

The spacer is the strip that holds the two lites apart around the edge. Old aluminium spacers conduct cold straight to the edge of the glass, which is why old windows frost and drip along the bottom. A warm-edge spacer uses low-conductivity materials, so the edge stays warmer and condensation drops.

### Which surface should the Low-E coating be on?

In Toronto's heating-dominated climate, the Low-E coating usually goes on surface 3, the inner lite facing the gap, to keep heat in. For west-facing rooms that overheat, a solar control coating on surface 2 may be better. We spec this on the quote.

### How long do double-pane units last?

A well-made dual-seal unit with a warm-edge spacer typically lasts 20-25 years. Units with a single seal or installed without setting blocks often fail in 10-15.

### Can you upgrade single-pane windows to double-pane?

Only if the sash pocket is deep enough to take a sealed unit. Many older wood windows are not. We check on site and tell you honestly. For heritage sash, a storm window is often the better option.

### How long does a double-pane replacement take?

7-14 business days for the units to be made, then 30-90 minutes per window to install. The old units stay in until then.

### Do you replace double-pane glass in car windows?

No. We do residential, commercial and storefront glass only. We do not repair or replace automotive glass or windshields.
